Divinity: Original Sin survey demonstrates that its fans really love isometric CRPGs

  • 339

Larian Studios, the studio responsible for Divinity: Original Sin and its forthcoming sequel, opened a survey earlier this year to get a read on its audience's taste in RPGs. And as you might expect, the CRPG was the most preferred genre, with Action RPG and strategy games coming in second and third respectively.

It's not the most unexpected result, since Larian's games are excellent CRPGs, but other insights are less obvious. For instance, the 15,000 participants generally preferred isometric and / or top-down RPGs, while preferring third-person and first-person far less so, in that order. This isn't a result you'd expect from a more general audience, but then, Larian have lately specialised in isometric CRPGs.

Meanwhile, among the most prized characteristic in an RPG are being "story rich" and that they have "character progression", while co-operative play and crafting are the lest important elements. Oh, and turn-based combat, predictably enough, is far and away the preferred method of biffing compared to real-time and real-time with pause.

There are other interesting stats: Fallout 4 sucks, apparently, while the "ideal length" of an RPG should sit within the 40-60 hour timeframe (with 100+ hours a close second). The full results are over here, and if the results influence Larian's direction at all then... don't expect much to change, to be honest. Not that they need to.

If the story is good and the mechanics work, why not love this type of games ? :)

Can someone give me a short definition or a summary as to what the hell a CRPG is? Are they exclusively games that have a turn based combat?

A huge lot of people that i know do not like them, and i'm pretty sure i'm the only one out of my friends list that love turn based RPG's like Divinity original sin or the older fallout games.

And i'm willing to bet a lot of people like the Top Down camera angles mainly because of the MOBA games that are so popular, and not as much from the isometric RPG's.

Then again this graph might be a bit inaccurate, since this is made by a company known for their really great turn based isometric RPG, which i'm sure a lot of the people that took the poll are fans of them, thus some specific genres and games might have some bias. Just like how Divinity Original Sin has the best results on a poll made by the Divinity Original Sin creators, like wow what a shock.

If let's say EA made a survey, i'm sure the "First Person" camera angle, competitive games or games that are more action oriented would have a lot more votes given the audience that will participate.

Either way biased as it may be, i'm glad to see a graph were games like XCOM are the most well liked compared to the other turn based games, since i'm a huge fan of XCOM.
