Help research of dementia by playing this VR game

  • 469

The mobile game Sea Quest Hero which was launched last year and which played about three million players, has now received its VR release. Even though this is not a novelty at first glance, the VR mode in this game will allow gamers to contribute to the development of dementia research - a disease that today suffers nearly 50 million people worldwide.

Namely, the game is based on maze through the labyrinths then thus collects information about player orientation and navigation, which are important for research because spatial orientation loss is one of the first symptoms of dementia. Even though in basic shape collects player behaviour data and uses them for research, with VR mode researchers get 15 times more precise data and measurements in situations where people are not sure where to go.

For contribution to research you do not have to spend a lot of time in the game if you have problems with VR devices - even two-minute gameplay is used to gather the amount of data that matches the five hour research in the lab.

Initiative for such a research has been launched by Deutsche Telekom in partnership with the University of London, the University of Eastern England.

That is truly a great initiative. Too bad I don't own a VR set myself or I would definitely be trying this one out.

A clever and fun way to crowdsource research. I wish them the best of luck and hopefully they make a breakthrough in their studies.

Very intuitive! I would definitely help them if I had a VR set.
