Star Citizen sells virtual parcels for real money
Cloud Imperium Games is trying to build its own name in the world of videogames through the "most ambitious game ever". For now they can boast that their Star Citizen is the most successful crowdfunding campaign in the history of gaming industry, however the same is often mentioned as a title that most likely will not be experienced also by people who are currently working on it. In any case, Star Citizen so far has collected nearly 170 million dollars, but the developer still haunts the new ways to grab as much money as possible before the game finally comes out.
Specifically, from today you can buy a virtual piece of land in Star Citizen for real money. For 50 dollars you can buy a plot of 16km2, and for 100 dollars you get a plot of 64km2. During the purchase of both land you get Geotack beacon, that saves your exact coordinates of your land and informs you of weather and inconvenience, as well as whether anyone has unknowingly sneaked into your land. If you do not want to spend heavily earned money on a virtual piece of land, Cloud Imperium has said that after the release of the game you can buy it with virtual currency or with progress in the game.
Furthermore, the developer claims that players that have bought a piece of a virtual land will not have any advantage over those who do not own anything, as well as that there is no better place to settle. Specifically, some players will select certain land for natural resources, others for trade routes, and the third only wants a place with a nice view.
Since this gameplay mechanic is still not available for use in the game that does not have also framed release date, your money will help developers to continue with the development of Star Citizen or eventually make a new way to attract mass of players to spend money on something what will not be used for months, and maybe also for years.
