Steam purges Pepe emoticons from community market after copyright complaint

  • 31

Several emoticons, all of which can be bought on the marketplace, have been affected by the takedown. While they exist, icons in inventory, showcases, and chat appear as blank images, They now come with a note that reads ''emoticon art currently unavailable due to DMCA takedown notice submitted on behalf of Matt Furie''.

Pepe the Frog was first created by Furie in the 2005 comic series Boy's Club, and became popular meme across several sites, including 4chan. Over time, Pepe has become a symbol of the alt-right, prompting Furie's publisher Fantagraphics Books released a statement condemning ''illegal and repulsive appropriations'' of the Pepe image.

And probably that will happen too. He can issue a DMCA takedown any time. It's his intellectual property. He is the creator of Pepe. Those emotes are also paid for and he gets none of the money. Plus the streamers didn't ask for permission to use Pepe as an emote. You need to subscribe on Twitch in order to use streamer emotes.

On Discord there's Pepe emotes as well. But at least you can use those if you are on a server. You have to pay for NItro if you want to use it on other servers. So he can take down those as well.

The guy who made Pepe will sue anyone if you don't comply. I think Pepe should stay on 4chan. Let's not make people there angry.

A little late,  so he is paying lawyers to try and stop something this prevalent.  What a huge waste of time and money.  It would be like Watterson trying to erase and remove all the Calvin pissing stickers from the world,

So I do not know how to remove anything. Speaking about Twitch, I also meant that now he will delete it wherever there are no rights of use.
