Valve revokes support for Filipino Dota 2 Major, citing privacy concerns

  • 55

“Based on information we’ve recently confirmed regarding new government regulations for esports players entering the Philippines,” the Dota 2 blog says, “we have decided to rescind the tournament’s Major designation, including the Pro Circuit qualifying points, for the Galaxy Battles 2018 tournament. This is based on what we feel are unreasonable infringements on the privacy of the players, as a condition to enter the country. The tournament itself may still proceed, but without any involvement of Valve or the Dota Pro Circuit.”

Recent changes to Filipino law categorize esports players as “e-gamers,” subject to the same licenses as athletes in traditional sports. According to the government’s website, requirements for athlete licensing include photo ID and medical conditions such as drug tests. Dota 2 fans - including some from the Philippines - on Reddit speculate that the current president’s aggressive anti-drug policies (which some suggest amount to human rights violations) would be a strong factor in Valve’s decision.

Valve say they’re working with tournament organizers “to find a way to run a Major with the invited and qualifying teams, including the Pro Circuit points that would have been available in Galaxy Battles 2018.”

The Philippines government wants the economic windfall of a major DOTA video game tournament and yet wants to impose restrictions.

Fine take tournament  elsewhere and let the Philippines citizens, fans, and local players outrage and or protest over the loss. I would feel sorry for them but there own government put them in this position not DOTA or Valve.

It's a entertainment event / videogame compition, not the freaking olympics.

Drug testing......    name a illegal or legal drug that improves mental acuity and performance in competitive gaming,

I really... really... really... COUGH... really want to know.

Oh sorry, caffeine, lets test for that.

I totally agree, but the harshness was forced apon them by there own government and not by Valve or the Dota Pro Circuit or my comments.

I really don't want my comment to delve into politics as that never ends well on any forum, so I will just say I truly feel for the fans and players and wish them and Valve a speedy resolution that all parties can live with.

Major respect to Valve for taking a stand for what they believe is an injustice.
