Research has shown that every third female gamer receives insults in the online multiplayer
Gaming communities who gather around the popular online games most often know to be quite toxic. This means that in the online multiplayer you can hear some very creative insults, threats and similar, and this is especially apparent in the case of a minority audience, or women.
This is also confirmed by a recent survey by the British company Bryter conducted on 1151 respondents from the UK, aged 16 and over. The main criterion for participating in the interview was that the participants had to play a video game on a console or PC at least once a month. Among the sample, 85% of the women surveyed said how
they're playing video games for more than an hour a week.
On this sample, 33% of the players said they testified of discrimination by male players while playing. 52% received verbal insults, 46% received insulting messages of sexual tone, and 10% received a threat of rape. 20% of all respondents stated that for fear of discrimination they did not use voice communication in online multiplayer, and 11% of them completely avoided online multiplayer for the same reason.
Quite expected, views of female gamers in the videogame industry are divided. A total of 62% of them are looks positive, while 18% describe the same as sexist, 26% of them believe that this industry belongs to men. 59% think it is not working enough to attract women to a career in the videogame industry.
