Capcom Closes Their Vancouver Studio

  • 31

Today Capcom ceased production of their Vancouver studio. The studio produced classic titles such as the Dead Rising series and Puzzle Fighter. This loss will see over 150 employees laid off, added to the 50 layoffs earlier this year as a new Dead Rising title and an unknown third person title were in development.

Capcom released this statement to Kotaku on the situation:

“As a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan. A skeleton crew will remain until January 2019 to finalize closure operations and logistics.”

Cutting off Capcom’s western branch will see a 4.5 billion yen loss for the company. Despite the financial loss, it will not affect Capcom too bad thanks to the success of their recent release of Monster Hunter: World. The game was released back in January on consoles and on PC last month.  Monster Hunter World so far has sold over 8 million copies surpassing Capcom’s expectations on the title.

Though there are still questions regarding the future of the Dead Rising series. No future titles have been announced since the recent layoff. It does seem like a tough shift moving forward, those who were laid off earlier in the year probably saw this coming for their former co-workers.
