Irish Government Declares Loot Boxes Aren’t Affected by Gambling Laws

Since the loot box controversy peaked last year with Star Wars Battlefront II, various governments around the world began taking action against the business practice, with Belgium being one of the first to call loot boxes gambling. Other nations have expressed similar concerns, Ireland being one of them. However, the Irish government isn’t backing up its words with actions. On Sept. 27, David Stanton, minister of state in the Department of Justice, told the Senate that loot boxes do not fall under the jurisdiction of gambling legislation.

In my opinion loot boxes are okay if items are cosmetic only. I don't care if some people get money by selling their items but I do care if they have advantage in my games by spending more money on game.

They should be its gambling! Kids spend a lot of money on that, its addictive and it makes them gamblers!

Ah well, we can't expect (and don't need) every jurisdiction get the same ruling. Hopefully there's still enough pressure to kill that practice before it gets ubiquitous.


the less the government sticks its nose where it shouldn't, the easier it is. Strangled us all with their taxes, and the sense of zero of these fees. Government officials should be reduced, as well as all salaries cut.
