It's Hard to Believe, But World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is 10 Years Old

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Cinematic Trailer

It's one of those "where were you when" days as it's the tenth anniversary of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. WotLK was the second expansion to World of Warcraft and is touted by many as the best of Blizzard's creations.

It's begun.

Young heroes... I was once like you. You have come to this place seeking to bring judgement upon the damned. You will venture deep into forgotten lands. You will see wonders beyond imagining. But be warned. The land itself will rise up against you. Long forgotten terrors will smother your courage. Sacrifice everything as the final darkness falls... in the end, all that awaits you is death. Only then will you understand - you've been following in my footsteps all along.

So come then, you heroes! Come in all your power and glory! For in the final hour, all must serve the one... true... king.

The original description reads:

You've mastered the challenges of Outland, but are you ready for what's yet to come? From the frozen north come tidings of a dormant evil awakening, filling the hearts and minds of Azeroth's citizens with unease. Heroes across the land are preparing for the harsh journey ahead with a sense of anticipation and purpose. Echoes of Doom, the last major content patch for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, lays the groundwork for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It adds a wealth of improvements and entirely new gameplay features to World of Warcraft.

So...where were you then?

In other WotLK news, some of the events of the Wrath Gate, one of the expansion's most pivotal moments, have been altered. Originally, when the united forces of Horde and Alliance members attacked the Wrath Gate, they were plague bombed through the actions of Grand Apothecary Putress, seemingly in defiance of Sylvanas Windrunner. However, in the recently published Warcraft Chronicles Volume 3, it was hinted that Sylvanas may have known about, or had a connection to, the attack.

The Wrathgate

Those who have seen the cinematic for the Wrath Gate see Dranosh Saurfang, son of current Orc leader Varok Saurfang, killed by the Lich King before the troops are blighted. However, now it is being suggested that he was killed by the blight, something that seems to fit into the current narrative for Sylvanas's evil acts, a complete retcon of the original story.

To say that the community is not happy with the changes in the Lich King narrative is to understate things greatly.
