CEO of Gearbox Loves the Epic Store in Tweetstorm and says Borderlands 3 Exclusive is right Decision

The CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, maker of the Borderlands franchise has unleashed a tweetstorm explaining why going to the Epic Store was the correct decision over Steam despite the huge backlash by fans.

Pitchford covered a lot of ground in his tweetstorm but he strongly believes that increased competition is not only healthy, but inherently necessary for the industry.

From a track record point of view, my expectation is that Epic’s investment in technology will outpace Valve’s substantially. When we look back at Steam in five or ten years, it may look like a dying store and other, competitive stores, will be the place to be.

One may look at other stores, like Origin or U-Play. Those aren’t real competitors to Steam. A competitor to Steam needs to have an installed base and be sufficiently neutral in alignment so that all publishers and developers who support the store can trust a fair economy.

Epic has credibility here because they have been supplying engine technology to the industry for over 20 years

Whiles he admits the Epic Store isn't as polished yet, he believes that Epic will continue to improve the store and has the necessary resources to do it.

Epic is sure to invest huge amounts of resources specifically for the features most important for Borderlands 3

Valve is a private company and, to the best that we can see, a huge amount of the value that Valve has generated has been used to enrich the handful of people who own and manage the company.

And here is what he thinks of the current situation.

You can bitch and moan and brigade and stalk my shit, but at the end of the day when we look back at this moment we’ll realize that this was the moment where the digital stores on PC became unmonopolized.

while i agree with them i also wish there will be a program that will be able to fuse all the stores in a single account, since having  uplay, origin, steam, epic store,gog..well..i'ts starting to get out of hand, expecially when you think about boundles you may get with some games on a platform and others on a different one

Interstellar

Competition is Always a good thing…
But I don't expect Epic being a much better platform in the (near) future!
What I can understand is the publishers can earn more money by releasing on Epic, and even more by releasing it first as a (timed) exclusive. Steam should match these conditions… in my opinion.
Steam has one drawback, it's store has been overrun by indie games (with sometimes very bad quality and lately also adult and hentai games). And while Epic is still a small store the game you can find are much fewer and get much more exposure (for now)!
