DayZ Will Be Banned Completely In Australia
Earlier this week news came that, despite the game being rated MA15 + many times via an IARC online method, the Classification Board had blocked the physical sale of survival sandbox DayZ. Today, Kotaku Australia can show that the classification committee not only sticks to this rating, but also works to have the game digitally sold in Australia.
On June 4, after a request from local retailers to sell the game in brick-and-mortar shops around the nation, the classification board awarded DayZ an RC credit score for the first time. According to the study delivered on Friday evening, Kotaku Australia was forbidden "incentives or rewards-related illicit or prohibited use of drugs"
"Through general gameplay, the player is able to collect and use a variety of equipment, supplies and weaponry," the report says. "One of the options to restore the player's health is a marijuana joint, labelled 'cannabis', which is denoted by a cannabis bud in the player's inventory."
The reasons for Fallout 3 being originally prohibited in Australia are identical, and the study notes that while the R18 + classification rules allow substance consumption, it is not possible to use Fallout 3 "Detailed or Realistic." "If the use of cannabis within the context of this game did not act as an incentive or reward, its impact could therefore be accommodated within the R18+ classification".
"The use of drugs (marijuana) as an incentive or reward during the gameplay exceeds what can be accommodated within the R18+ classification and therefore must be Refused Classification," the report says.
A month after the RC rating, DayZ developers Bohemia Interactive requested a distinct IARC rating. The game was then classified as MA15+, which has immediately the same power as the classification board classification. The Classification Committee is, however, empowered to override the IARC scores.
One month after RC, DayZ developers demanded a separate IARC rating for Bohemia Interactive. The game was then categorized as MA15 + with the same authority as the classification board. However, it is authorized to override the IARC results by the Classification Committee.
