Wolfenstein developers are “incredibly disappointed” that fighting Nazis is now “problematic”
The Wolfenstein games have had one thing in their heart since Castle Wolfenstein was released in 1981: the killing of Nazis. The strategy for MachineGames was to proceed with this tradition in 2014: Wolfenstein: the new order, placing an inspiring account of what Wolfenstein was always. Ever since the gameplay loop has become a source of controversy, developers have been disheartened.
PCGamesInsider.biz talked this past week about the team's surprise of learning that they are making contentious games to the Senior Game Director for MachineGames Andreas Öjarfors at Gamecom.
“It’s incredibly weird and disappointing,” he said. “We never meant for our stories to be relevant; we wanted to tell great, interesting stories to the best of our abilities.”
In the run-up to the Wolfenstein II launch: The New Colossus publisher Bethesda launched a social media advertising campaign that included the # NoMoreNazis Hashtag and slogans like "Make Nazi-Free America Again." Enough was complained about this, a vocal group made a declaration that Bethesda had eventually clarified the firm's stance that "Nazis are bad and un-American."
“When we started to talk about Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, we started to get comment online about the theme of the game, fighting the Nazis,” Öjerfors said. “Somehow people felt that was problematic, which is just incredibly disappointing.”
In his short interview Öjerfors is also concerned about the increase of right-wing extremism and the format of online discourse among extremists.
