Destiny 2: Lightfall Expansion Revealed

  • 1

This week, Bungie's latest Destiny 2 showcase event shed light on the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, Lightfall. While the expansion was initially announced back in 2020, today's showcase showed off the first trailer and confirmed its launch day: February 28, 2023. Fans have met the release news with excited speculation about the meaning behind the newest expansion's name and pondering the fates of Commander Zavala and the crew.

While we need to wait until next year to see what happens to the Guardians, here is what we know about the upcoming Lightfall expansion and how it fits into The Light and Darkness Saga of Destiny 2. While Lightfall will follow the prior expansions in unveiling a new destination, new raid, and new weapons/armor, Lightfall ups the ante and will introduce even more exciting elements that veterans and newcomers alike will rave over.

Lightfall follows The Witch Queen expansion, with The Witness taking center stage in this newest expansion. While initially hinted at in older Destiny lore as The Winnower, The Witness officially debuted in The Witch Queen-- and despite roughly 5 minutes of screentime, fans have been mesmerized and horrified with it’s presence and goals. Lightfall's campaign narrative picks up with the former Cabal Emperor Calus returning as a Disciple of The Witness. Calus’ Shadow Legion has overtaken Neomuna, Neptune’s beautiful-yet-dangerous capital, and Guardians will have to take the fight to the city to face off against the Shadow Legion and Tormentors-- a brand-new enemy that will push Guardians' skills to their limits. Those who think the Tormentors aren't enough of a challenge can tap into a new Legendary mode, where the increase in challenge results in even better rewards.

Neomuna's neon cyberscape will be the backdrop for discovering the hidden threads that bind reality. These hidden threads are the key to Lightfall's exciting newest addition: the Strand subclass. Strand can be harnessed by players in many ways, from powerful woven attacks to grappling across buildings. It is up to Guardians to use this reality-weaving ability to stop Calus' invasion of Neomuna as he paves the way for the arrival of The Witness.

As the cherry on top of this jam-packed announcement, Bungie has revealed a new partnership with Epic Games to launch Destiny 2 on Epic Games Store. Destiny 2 will also launch content in Fortnite and Fall Guys and the pirate-themed adventure, Season of Plunder, which launched on August 23 in Destiny 2.

Fans of Destiny 2 should keep their eyes on Bungie's official channels, as they've hinted at releasing even more franchise news in the upcoming months. Check out Bungie's official Destiny 2 channels for more teasers and releases.

Interstellar

The shooting, mobility, and various abilities all feel fantastic but, sadly, it's all those MMO trappings, the different currencies, the daily/weekly quest grind, and the way they have to constantly revamp/rework/tweak systems every time they bolt on new DLC that leaves me absolutely cold on Destiny.  Also doesn't help that it's impossible to follow the story/lore at this point.  Bungie seriously needs to make a deal with Netflix or Amazon to create an animated series that can help ease new or lapsed players into that world.

Dodging responsibilities since 1993

Could have been a great game, but then they started removing some of its best content to make room for more season passes. Shame
