We did not lose much because Half-Life 3 anyway would not concluded the story of the series
One of the reasons why everyone is waiting for the return of the Half-Life series and the arrival of "three" is that the story of Gordon Freeman and his companion Alyx Vance was suddenly broken after three chapters. Except the expectations that the next Half-Life will be the best game ever, fans expect also continuation of a story that has a bunch of open questions.
However, ten years later, it is clear that Half-Life 3 is not in sight, and with consideration that Valve left all the scriptwriters who have been working on the previous stories, if that game onetime comes back to life, the question is whether will be there continuation of the story about Gordon Freeman.
In any case, it's interesting to hear that the continuation to that story should never have come to an end. Namely, the screenwriter of the provi-dent third episode for HL2, Mark Laidlaw said how the story by his wish would always end in a vacant space, or cliffhanger.
"I was expecting each part to end without a story conclusion and so in no wise ... There was some rumor that the third episode or HL3 would end with the story of Gordon Freeman, and I do not think that's true. My intent was to round off the story that began with Half-Life 2, but it would still be like HL1 or HL2, with Gordon in an indefinite space, on pending till the next game. So, one cliffhanger for another, " - said Laidlaw.
Laidlaw also points out that he intended to say goodbye to Half-Life series after the next game, but as he left Valve earlier, he no longer intends to go back to the project if it ever comes back to life.
