Reddit went crazy on Electronic Arts justification for forced micro-transactions
After the beta testing of Star Wars Battlefront II we learned that the whole advancement in the game is related to opening of loot boxes, or a lottery where you never know what you'll get. To make matters even more alarming, progress is deliberately stretched so that game makes player to speed up things by spending real money on micro-transactions.
Although EA and DICE said that this system will be dynamic then that will eventually adapt to the feedback from the players, nothing has changed. Star Wars Battlefront II is out on the Access service and players quickly realized that unlocking just one character, for example Darth Vader, in Battlefront II it is necessary to on an average spend 40 hours. Of course, with that you do not even spend a cent of real money on micro-transactions.
The representative of Electronic Art on Reddit did not run from the fact that the grind was present in the game, but he tried to justify it. According to the view of publishing house, 40 hours of grinding to unlock a character is there to "bring players a sense of pride and achievement when unlocking different heroes."
The statement reiterates that EA and DICE will listen to feedback from players and make changes through game updates, but that does not help the situation at all. Reddit users got infuriated to commemorate the "pride and achievement" in a game that can be speeded up by paying. Reacted quite briskly after which the entire discussion had to be locked. But, before it came to that, the comment from Electronic Arts entered the history of Reddit as the comment with the largest number of negative reviews ever.
It can be said freely that a community of hardcore players with this went to a crusade against micro-transactions in today's games. But, downvotes on Reddit are one thing, and gaming sales and micro-transactions other, so like that will likely to be a guerrilla war against the windmill.
