Destiny 2 was scamming players about the progress in the game

The picture you see above is funny by itself - buy yourself a candy treat and get faster progress in Destiny 2! But it's not quite funny when players find out that Bungie is actually lying about their progress in the game through the number of XP points.

Namely, players have noticed that the number of earned points in some cases is not correctly counted in the total meter until the next level/ingram. With further investigation it was found that Destiny 2 secretly slows down the pace of progress, even though to the player still claims that its rewarding him with significant amounts of XP.

If you immediately became obsessed and just wait for this story to go into microtransactions, it seems that the thing is not designed with that in mind. Slowing down progress in Destiny 2 happens under certain conditions, for example, if the player focuses on grinding by playing only public events. In this case game by rigging the amount of achieved XP cares that the player does not progress faster than he would otherwise have progressed.

Although it is not controversial that Destiny 2 this way encourages players to engage with various activities, and not just with those that bring the fastest progress, players are by no means satisfied with the lack of transparency about it. Bungie therefore immediately decided to react, by agreeing that the system did not work the way it should. So they turned it off and now all the activities have different amounts of XP points to achieve.

Their reaction is great, but the fact that they reacted only when the players noticed the scam does not go into their favor. Given with raised dust on microtransactions, the lack of transparency about these things can greatly harm the game alone.

This is the kind of sleazy stuff I can't stand.  The only reason they retracted it is because they got caught and didn't want any further public relations damage.

Interstellar

Not exactly scamming, but yeah, that progression system was fucked up.

I did notice what seemed like a pretty substantial XP throttle after my first 3 level gains of the week buff went away. At first I thought it was normal, but it didn't take long to figure out something was not quite right when 10,000+ XP from a public event moved my XP bar the tiniest of margins. Kind of leaves a sour taste in my mouth knowing it was an intentional implementation.

The situation is unaceptable... The companies are breaking the games only for more $$benefits$$!

Nice to see that Bungie reversed course once the community started demanding answers.

It's certainly good that Bungie addressed the situation but it's still disconcerting that they designed it that way in the first place. If it was intended to encourage microtransactions then it would be disgusting but understandable. However, this doesn't appear to be the case so apparently Bungie were deceiving players... well, just for the sake of it. To me, this suggests a level of contempt for customers that I find rather concerning.

Then again, since Bungie are a subsidiary of Microsoft, I guess "contempt for customers" shouldn't come as any surprise.

Cheers!
