Battlerite - Everything you need to know

  • 48

Hello AWA community! Hope you're all doing great. Came back after a few months of absence with an everything you need to know post regarding Battlerite.

Battlerite is a PvP arena brawler and the spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed Bloodline Champions. Experience the unique combination of a top-down shooter meeting a fast-paced fighting game and take part in highly competitive, adrenaline-fueled 2v2 and 3v3 battles. You take control over one of many Champions, each with unique abilities to master.

Master the Arena in explosive battles of reaction. Choose your Champion, team up with friends, and dive into combat - for glory awaits only those who seek it.

Aim skill-shots and dodge projectiles with the use of WASD movement & cursor-based aiming. Wield total control over your champion and execute massive attacks against opponents.

Gain strength and upgrade your abilities using rites. Select your rites to strategically customize your play style.

Show off your skills in style. From weapons and outfits to victory stances, there’s a huge variety of cosmetic customizations to make you stand out from the crowd.

Behind the colorful art style is a free-to-play MOBA crafted specifically for intense, ultra-competitive teamfights. Its solid balance, skill-based combat, and ever-growing cast of champions go a long way to ensure every trip to the arena breathed new life into each match and kept me coming back for more.

The action takes place on one of five maps that all at least look unique due their starkly contrasting and distinctive themes.

Battlerite currently sports a relatively shallow 24-champion roster, but the steady addition of a new character every couple months keeps things just fresh enough. Each of them brings something different to the arena.

On top of that, champions are given even more depth with adjustments called Battlerites. You can add up to five Battlerites in a loadout pre-match, with each of them slightly augmenting a champion’s existing skills.

Once you learn the basics, the dance of combat is where Battlerite truly shines. Every dash, spell, and key click feels consequential because the movement and positioning of your champion are just as important as landing blows against your opponents. The difference between life and death can come down to a single frame, and using WASD movement allows you to precisely sidestep enemy spells while using your mouse to simultaneously aim your retaliatory volley.

Battlerite respects your time, but beckons you to put in the effort needed to grow. That push to get better, unlock a new champion, or to hit the next competitive rank are the real and satisfying means of progression and they contrast strongly with the tacked-on and frustrating progression outside of the arena.

The free-to-play setup meant these level-ups reward you with either an extremely small amount of currency or a loot crate that, when opened, unleashes the full force of slot machine-style cosmetic gambling. To be fair, developer Stunlock is pretty generous with the number of crates you can earn through playing, and thankfully there’s nothing inside them that provides any sort of advantage during a match.

For true fans there are purchasable packs:

  • the All Champions Pack which unlocks all of the current and future Champions featured in Battlerite, and

  • the Ultimate Fan Pack which will reward you with unique cosmetics and account bonuses, and as they say "will truly make you stand out from the crowd".

To distinguish itself from the MOBA crowd, Battlerite went for pure, skill-based action and hit the mark dead center. Stunlock’s approach to MOBA combat creates a near-even playing field that makes each outplay feel earned.

I played a bit of SMITE. Seemed great at that time, however got bored fast. Battlerite seems something new in the MOBA world. The most interesting part is that Battlerite fans don't want it to be associated with the word MOBA and different arguments are made regarding this matter. Also, there's one from their AMA: "The term “MOBA” is unavoidably associated with, and defined by games such as League of Legends and Dota 2. It is to the general public a genre where you push lanes, take down towers, kill minions, progress your hero over the course of a match for the target goal of destroying the enemy base. Battlerite doesn’t have any of that and even though the term “MOBA” literally is a great match with the gameplay of Battlerite, it’s not a great match in terms of what people would expect from Battlerite if it were to be used. That’s why we choose to go with Team Arena Brawler instead."

Much respect.  It is nice to see one rise above the others and try to define itself as new and different.  I will be keeping an eye on this one.

I'll give this a shot. MOBA have been wearing on me but this looks like it changes things up a bit, so maybe it'll breathe new life into the genre for me.
