MSIX is a new installation format that will combine Win32 and UWP applications

Even though since release Microsoft has been trying to push its Universal Windows Program (UWP) application format, most developers their applications (including games) are still distributing in classic, desktop or Win32 formats. It seems that Microsoft is aware that this will not change so soon so they have come up with an inescapable solution - a new installation format called MSIX.

In theory, MSIX is an installation format that supports all kinds of applications, including UWP and Win32. This means that Win32 applications in the future could be distributed in the Windows Store application. MSIX is also open source software so it probably has a bright future. However, it will take some time for it to reach its wider use, and thus to the eventual bloom of Windows Store.

I really don't like the sound of this. Microsoft are pushing UWP hard and to be perfectly frank it's the worst possible thing that can happen to Windows. That's a whole different discussion but in relation to this news, I fear Microsoft are steering developers down a path of forced obsolescence. Too early to tell but it's their typical strategy - if voluntary adoption doesn't match expectations, involuntary adoption is invariably the next step.

Cheers!

Very well put.  It's all about control over what can and cannot be installed on Windows, and could have dire ramifications for third party storefronts like Steam down the road.  I believe Valve warned about this very early on regarding Windows 10 if my recollection is correct.

before, games having to write one version for Steam (Win32) and one for Windows Store/Xbox is a really huge waste of resources, but now who knows

Effect

It looks good ~ do not know The actual effect of what

Yeah, sounds like not a very positive move from MS, but lets not make quick conclusions.

I don't know i still dislike UWP even if now with the MSIX you can install Win32 programs too.

There was never a need for msi files and there is no need for msix files. Installation/Setup files are executable programs and should use the standard exe format, like all the other programs.

as long as it works with one mouse click, why care which format everybody prefers.
