Wildstar, and developer Carbine Studios, are shutting down

Carbine Studios, the maker of the free-to-play sci-fi MMO Wildstar, is being shut down. The closure, reported by Kotaku, will also bring about the end of Wildstar itself.

"Today, we are closing Carbine Studios and will begin the process of winding WildStar down to ultimately shutter the game,” Wildstar parent NCsoft said in a statement.

"WildStar players who have spent money within the game will be refunded purchases from July 1, 2018 until the payment system is shut off. We are also in the process of identifying the teams that will be doing the work to bring WildStar to a close. These decisions are very difficult to make and we are in the midst of shifting as many of our teammates as possible into other roles within the organization."

Wildstar launched in 2014 and we liked it a lot, although we also took note of the risks inherent in launching a subscription-based MMOs in a WoW-dominated world. Sure enough, it went free to play a little over a year later, and then came to Steam a year after that. But its peak player count on Steam was just over 5000, and the average concurrent player count quickly tailed off into triple digits; it hasn't been above 200 since October 2017.

A date for the Wildstar shutdown hasn't been announced.

I remember how hyped so many were for this game after the initial teaser video. For a couple years, or so sites would list it as one of the online games they were looking forward to the most. Then it launched, and it's been downhill ever since, now it's closing.

Can't say I'm surprised, the last major update was in September 2017 and since then they've only added cosmetics to the game.

This is unfortunate as today's game developers need to understand that most gamers DO NOT want to be chained to a strictly online-only video game.

This isn't just because of not wanting multi-player. Being in a multi-player game has its benefits especially when you know who you are teaming up with. However, being crammed into a game with a worlds worth of strangers which include bots, trolls, toxic gamers and gold-spammers is just too much of an unnecessary headache. Seriously, who wants to spend money on that drama?

And then there is the financial demographic which game developers apparently forgot to take into account. Not everyone has money to burn. Paying for the Internet alone is not cheap! Not every parent is going to readily give their kids money to go out and buy a $60 game let alone shell out $30 a month to subscribe to an online video game that is doomed to be shut down permanently some day! (Looking at you, Star Wars Galaxies!)

And before all of you console gamers start feeling smug, just remember what happened to Sega, SNK Neo Geo and NEC TurboGrafx16! Great consoles die too.

Some of us live in a real world with real-world expenses and having to budget accordingly. And so, who exactly are game developers looking to to buy their games + micro-transactions and pay a monthly subscription?

If making video games is so crushingly expensive as the studios claim, there needs to be some serious reforms in the video game industry or else I can see the impending closure of every MMO, every video game studio, Origin, Steam, Gog, Nintendo, X-Box and Sony.

There must be a return to off-line gaming with multi-player as an option, NOT a rule.

Its interesting to see, that ppl still believe they might get upvoted comments, bc as far as I know you do not get points for simply commenting.

By removing the vote system completly we cant do anything agains these fellos here. Why not at least give a downvote option...

I still know the times when I got hyped for this game
And in the end I never got the time to get into it.

Rest in peace Carbine Studios o7

I remember playing Wildstar it was a pretty good game.  Just wasn't original enough to get me to change to it full time.8
