Epic Games Store Announced

  • 105

Epic Games is historically known for its Unreal Engine and more recently for a teeny-weeny game you may know called Fortnite. The company is now making a big play in the realm of digital downloads with its upcoming Epic Games Store, and it has Steam squarely in its crosshairs.

The relationship with game developers seems to be the Store's main selling point. For that purpose, the first move is a flat 12% royalty for Epic on games sold through its storefront, a percentage that seriously undercuts Steam's usual 30% take. Furthermore, Epic is trying to score extra points by not having royalty tiers, a jab at Steam's recently announced sliding-scale royalty table. There's an extra bonus for developers using Unreal Engine, too. Epic won't charge developers the usual 5% royalty for Unreal Engine games sold in its store.

While there is no doubt that this is a good deal for game developers, it'll be interesting to see how Epic plan to drive customers away from Steam without discounting games and thus reducing profit margins for the developers. Love it, or hate it, Steam is the go to platform for PC gamers and it continues to go from strength to strength.

As a consumer I think it's always a great idea not to put everything in one basket. I hope anyone can break Steam's dominant position, and the time seems to be ripe for disruption.

You don't have to buy steam keys on steam. You can buy also buy games from other shops and activate it on steam…
From physical copies to online stores like GMG, Voidu, humblebundle, Fanatical, …
You can even check prices on some sites, like isthereanydeal.com
Or better yet: free keys like you can somethimes get on this site, and others …

And don't forget the usual steam sales!
I hope steam will stay the go to platform for games...

Well, now I know where I will publish my first game - made with Unity by the way. ...but after that, will learn Unreal to go more into that store. Got to love those profits.
