Respawn tried “approximately a bojillian” ways to get Titans into Apex Legends

“We prototyped approximately a bo-jillian ways of having Titans in this game,” executive producer Drew McCoy tells IGN, “and the reality was they were an incredible unbalancing factor. That goes back to the goals of Titans from Titanfall 1 and 2. They were meant to be a giant power-up for a period of time. Whereas battle royale games, specifically Apex Legends, are trying to be much more of a level playing field.”

If you want to know what can wrong with an overpowered item in battle royale, just look at Fortnite’s Infinity Blade – an item so powerful that players revolted and it had to be pulled from the game.

McCoy says they tried to figure out a more balanced version of mechs in Apex Legends, but “when we tried Titans that weren’t as powerful, or had ‘gotchas’ to them, it really ruined that power fantasy of what a Titan is and should be. And at that point, why have them in the game?”

Why There Are No Titans in Apex Legends

It’s a similar story with those special movement abilities, which made combat tough to read. If the action’s that hard to follow, Respawn found that it cut down on the game’s strategic depth. You can hear McCoy’s full comments in the video above.

Reports suggest Apex Legends morphed out of Titanfall 3, but Respawn says more Titanfall is still on the way. In the meantime, you’ll have to make do without Titans and big movement abilities and enjoy an excellent battle royale with boots mostly on the ground.
