Prince Harry wants Fortnite to be banned

  • 72

According to this BBC news article,

Of Fortnite, he said: "That game shouldn't be allowed. Where is the benefit of having it in your household?

"It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It's so irresponsible."

"It's like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down."

He added that social media was "more addictive than alcohol and drugs".

Some doctors around the world are treating excessive videogame as a disorder similar to alcohol and substance abuse, affecting specially the young, who are the most vulnerable to this kind of addiction.

While awareness is rising, very few people currently meet the USA Health Guidelines for Physical Activity. Physical activity is a main resource in addiction and depression recovery and prevention.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services,

more than 80% of adults do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, and more than 80% of adolescents do not do enough aerobic physical activity to meet the guidelines for youth.

What are your thoughts about this?
Is videogame addictive?
What's the line between having fun and having an addiction?
What makes something an addiction?
Do some videogame companies make their games so that people feel "hooked up" to their games?
Should governments have a say in this?

I have never played Fortnite in my life, but I heard a lot of young folks love that game. Some games have more mature audiences in general (like the latest God of War). Maybe gaming is not the problem, but the way games deal with their audience?

Then again, Prince Harry could be right. You seem to be forgetting that Prince Harry has seen real-life combat in his military service. He has killed and seen fellow soldiers being killed.

That being said, no war veteran sees combat as a game. Killing (or being killed) on the battlefield is no joke. In fact, many war veterans probably see video games as cheapening (and disrespecting) the personal cost and losses they have had to pay as a direct result from being in combat. A war veteran's PTSD is for life. When was the last time you saw PTSD depicted in a video game?

War. Is. Hell.

The truth be told, he has done far more in real life than any of us gamers have in the pretend world of video games! I do not condemn Prince Harry for his views! He's earned them!

Indeed, I can't recall of a game depicting PTSD, but I have seen it depicted in some movies. Would be nice if videogames went deeper into emotional questions, like the latest God of War did a little.

I don't think there should be violence just because. I think there should be a reason and an explanation. For example, it makes sense for me to be violence in Call of Duty games because they are games about real wars.
