The development studio got established back in 2016 in The Netherlands and then took over the development of the race simulator rFactor 2. Studio 397 will continue working on rFactor 2 under the lead of Motorsport Games.

Motorsport Games writes that they took over Studio 397 as well as rFactor 2 from Luminis, the company that established Studio 397. The American development studio wants to use the race simulator as the basis of all new upcoming racing games and other publications. Motorsport Games is currently working on a British Touring Car Championship game and previously created Nascar-, Le Mans- and Formula E games. All their games are based on the Unreal Engine.

The very popular race simulator rFactor 2 gets used by many players but also many companies. According to the developer, among others, Formula 1 drivers are using rFactor 2 to train. In 2020 there was a virtual 24 Hrs La Mans organized with rFactor 2. For that event, there was already cooperation between Studio 397 and Motorsport Games. Luminis claims that for this event 63 million peoples worldwide watched the live stream.

The race simulator got released as Open Beta back in 2012, under the development of Image Space Incorporated. That studio also made earlier versions of rFactor. It was in 2016 that Studio 397 took over that company. Studio 397 will stay responsible for the development of rFactor 2, neither will change the name of the management. Studio 397 is located in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands.
