CD Projekt robbed, thieves threaten to spoil Cyberpunk 2077

  • 33

The recent sequel to the Pirates of the Caribbean film series had an awkward situation as somebody stole a movie from Disney and threatened to let it in circulation online. Now similar, but a little less alarming situation is happening in the video game industry.

The victim is a company CD Projekt to which unidentified perpetrators stole internal documents, including design documents for the upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077. Now these thieves are blackmailing CD Projekt and threaten to release the documents to the public if their company does not pay ransom.

From the CD Projekt they informed their fans about everything and took the position that they would not negotiate with the thieves. They also point out that the documents in question are actually from the very early stages of development and do not represent the game in the current state. However, they advise that it would be best to completely ignore all informal information and to strive for official disclosure.

I don't think CDPR cares about this too much. If anything, it's some nice free advertisement. ;)

This.

Also, unfortunately, most of the time the "thieves" are internal

Lunar

Come on! That can't be true!

However, I like how CD Project reacted

Interstellar

I like their reaction. They won't be blackmailed and pay to get back something that's their's.

Planetary

Said it in the first thread on the topic, good on them for handling it the way they do; I think they'll get more positives from it than negatives.

(Also, a little jaded part of me wonders if it's real and not just a clever marketing ploy. But I do think it's real.)

Interstellar

they would not negotiate with the thieves.

haha! that will show them who is the boss, even when you have now power or control of the situation...

Interstellar

What if the story of Cyberpunk 2077 is about a hacker who got the sources of a new game whos blackmailing and threaten to release the sources to the public if their company does not pay ransom.

and all of these is a nice PR marketing trick !

:) Mind blown

Galactic

Wow that last comment was mind blowing (?

But then if this is real i applaud the way they acted because nobody should pay for something that belong to u period.
Sadly history has teach us that when this thing are real they never end up with thieves giving up and abandon their threats on the contrary like if it was a human kidnap they are going to release am image/video teasing and increasing the ransom otherwise.... you know the rest.
Is sad that this things happen on movie industry or videogame industry as well, but i think is better to ask ransom for something digital than a living human being, so is a contradictory feeling if u know what i mean.
The worst part is being taken by bitcoins system making it an untraceable currency allowing thieves to get away with it, therefore creating a lot of negative feedback to the crypto currency.
let's hope it gets solved soon with the less harm possible aka less spoiler about the project itself, and if for some reason something comes out i surely won't see it, i don't want to get spoiled by any means just see the result of the development.
