BLIZZARD SUES COMPANY WHO MADE OVERWATCH CLONE

  • 22

When a video game “takes” some gameplay mechanics and a core ‘feeling” from another title and tries to make it their own, that’s referred to as a clone. A great example of this is the recent Fortnite Battle Royale/PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds situation. However, there is such things as taken clones too far, such is the case with a Chinese company who apparently made not one but two games that were so like the Blizzard title Overwatch that the company has decided to take legal action.

Remember, PUBG is not an original concept either. So, that's not the best example really.

Having said that, clearly there's an acceptable way to make a clone and unacceptable ways. If you couldn't clone a certain style at all, that could mean we get like one FPS game, one ARPG, etc.. that would suck. On the other hand, designers can't and shouldn't get away with just straight up stealing everything about a game and calling it their own. They have to create new intellectual properties. I'd hope that since they are being sued, the Chinese companies crossed the line (which isn't exactly a new thing for Chinese companies).

Can we at least know the name of the Clone games???

Chinese developer 4399 developed two titles called "Hero Spear Battle"

and "Spearhead War Line" that infringe upon the rights of Blizzard.

Right. If Fortnite Battle Royale is the copy of PUBG and should be removed, then the majority of the RPG games with such classes as warrior, archer, magician, etc. would have to be removed as well. But if certain characters (their abilities or appearances), maps, and the way the game is played reminds the gamers of another similar game, then it should be a problem.
